Senior Isle of Wight club athlete Andy Frost has broken the Island Games and Guernsey all-comers record in the men's hammer.

The tenth Island Games, sponsored by NatWest, were opened last Thursday and run until Friday - but Frost's throw of 65.82m was one of a string of excellent performances on a busy Monday in Guernsey.

Frost, who was selected to represent the Isle of Wight having previously thrown a personal best to kick-off his season, showed just why he is an Under-23 international as he cleared the 65m mark to see off his rivals from the 15 other islands competing from all over the world.

The latest team to enter is Bermuda but, with the Isle of Wight bidding to stage the 2007 Games, Frost's display was the perfect fillip.

Isle of Wight AC's hammer squad was awarded a UK Athletics clubs:future grant last year for their progressive performances and have gone from strength to strength since.

Having previously not been able to use the throwing area at the club from September to April due to football and rugby commitments, the club now travel to Crawley for three visits with the money from the grant to train under the watchful eye of Mick Jones, the Commonwealth champion.

They were able to purchase some more equipment for their training and Frost has come to the fore, along with Amy Church and Catherine Marvin, who also were called up to represent the Isle of Wight in Guernsey.

Frost's Games record was matched in the men's 400 metres hurdles with a time of 51.27secs by Dale Garland of Guernsey - and by Jo McGarry of Jersey in the women's 10,000m in a time of 37mins; 34.4secs.

Last night, Guernsey led the medal table with nine golds, 12 silvers and six bronzes, ahead of Jersey (nine golds, seven silvers and ten bronzes) and the Isle of Man (eight golds, four silvers and five bronzes). The Isle of Wight were in seventh place with two golds, two silvers and six bronzes.
