Up to 10,000 women are expected to take part in this year's 10th anniversary Race for Life event in Southampton on July 20. So far more than 5,000 entrants have signed up but with less than a month to go the clock is ticking . . .

ALL ACROSS Southampton women are limbering up for this year's Race for Life event on July 20 at Southampton Common.

The team from the Hampshire Police Recruiting Department based at Netley wants to support cancer research, and highlight the force's efforts to recruit more women police officers into the service.

Women make up 21 per cent of Hampshire's officers, compared to an average of only 18 per cent in other forces, but the constabulary is committed to increasing this ratio.

Valerie King, the Recruitment Manager said: "Police officers have to be fit and motivated.

Anyone taking part in events like the Race for Life is likely to have those skills and we would like them to think about a new career with the police."

Members of the Uni-Strollers team also have their own personal reasons for taking part.

Julie Wheeler said: "I am doing it in memory of my dad who loved running and died when he was 59.

"I really want to do something worthwhile to raise money to help people not to have to go through the same sort of suffering."

Suzanne Middleton said: "I'm doing this in memory of my mother who endured various treatements for several years and kept going despite her failing health until she died aged 52. I hope to use some of that determination to get to the end of the 5km course !"
