AN ENGINEERING and design consultancy with its headquarters in Southampton has scooped a gong for sustainable building principles and a green strategy in this year's national Building Services Awards.

According to the judging panel in London, Gifford, which has offices up and down the country, was selected to receive the award because of its efforts to encourage commercial clients to opt for greener buildings.

The judges also singled out the fact that Gifford is putting its money where its mouth is and is currently constructing an extension to its head office in Southampton, using the same sustainable principles it promotes to others.

Gifford's approach to sustainable design is known as Commercial Green and involves inclusion of affordable variants of environmental ideals into a building's design to reap significant energy savings.

Gifford director Andrew Pettifer said: "Sustainable design will become increasingly important in the future and is a vital tool for engineers. We hope that national recognition of our achievements will encourage more clients to take the sustainable route."
