Davies, fishing from his own boat, landed five bass, five black bream and a brace of ballan wrasse in an event that attracted 86 competitors, who returned a good mixed haul of smoothhound, dogfish, bull huss, scad, bass, pollack, pout, black bream, ballan wrasse, thorneback rays, small-eyed-ray, blonde rays, stingrays and conger.

The prize for the best blonde ray was won by Steve Coombes from Warsash who is a member of Saltern SAC with a fish which tipped the scales down to 17lb 9oz.

The 42-year-old carpenter used a slither of fresh mackerel while fishing on the Hamble-based boat "Blue Dolphins" to tempt the specimen.

Closer to home, Duncan Middleton from the Waterside, beached a 9lb 11oz specimen bass from the deep-water section at Lepe during an evening session. The 43-year-old fitter used a free line slither of fresh mackerel fished at close range to tempt the specimen along with two other smaller fish during the same session.

Not to be outdone, Craig Baker from Southamp-ton used peeler crab to tempt a 16lb 10oz specimen smoothhound from the Hill Head section.

Baker caught his personal best hound over the high water period after casting a good size crab bait to round the 100-yard mark.

The action was somewhat disappointing during the all night open held along the Cogden section of Chesil beach, where plaice, dabs, sole, pout, poor cod and dogfish supplied limited action.

But Hugh Rathbone did include a nice small-eyed-ray weighing 9lb 4.50oz in his 18lb 5.50oz catch and, apart from winning the event, he also collected the pools for the heaviest round fish with both his ray and flatfish after beaching a 1lb 12oz plaice.
