DEMONSTRATORS turned out in their dozens to protest against plans to convert a historic fort into a housing development.
Members of the Fort Gilkicker Action Group wanted to show developers the strength of feeling against plans for the Gosport fort.
Chairman of the action group, Don Gordon, said he was pleased with the success of the protest.
He told the crowd of about 50 demonstrators: "The preservation of this area used and enjoyed by countless thousands far outweigh the restoration of the fort to provide luxury homes for 17 privileged families.
"We have the right to retain and continue to enjoy our green and pleasant land. Hampshire County Council must heed to the wishes of the vast majority and stop the development of the fort in order to preserve this unique sanctuary for our generation and future generations.''
He urged people to write to councillors to register their objections against the scheme by Hampshire County Council and Try Homes.
Protesters of all ages took part in the demonstration including nine year old Keeka Way. She said: "I love coming down here to play and I want my little brother to be able to as well.''
Her mum Julie Way said: "I brought Keeka down here almost every day when she was growing up. This is a fantastic place for kids."
One of the crowd not objecting to the plan was Marion Terry, 83, pictured, who staged a one-woman protest in favour of the plans. She said: "Don Gordon and the action group think they speak for everyone but they don't. I am in favour of this restoration project.''
