The architect who restored Windsor Castle after it was badly damaged by fire in 1992 is to help lead a Winchester heritage group.
Donald Insall, who is renowned for his conservation work, is to become vice-president of the City of Winchester Trust.
He was invited to do so after attending a public meeting on the redevelopment of the Broadway-Friarsgate area of the city centre.
Mr Insall (77) said: "I love Winchester. I have a great affection for the city."
On the Friarsgate planning brief, he said: "I thought one of the most important things was to enjoy and release the fresh water brooks because they are pretty much unique to the city but hidden away at present and it could be a very attractive feature."
His London-based practice has won more than 100 awards. Past projects include the refurbishment of a highly-ornate wooden carved ceiling in the House of Lords.
Roger Backhouse, chairman of the trust, said: "We are delighted to have his wisdom and experience on board."
