Princess Ida, Southampton Operatic Society, The Nuffield Theatre, Southampton
This version of a lesser-known Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera has modernised lyrics, 1950s costuming and great style.
It pokes gentle fun at education for women, telling the story of the early betrothal of Ida and Hilarion, and the lengths to which Hilarion has to resort in order that the wedding takes place. To charm Ida, and to finally gain her hand, Hilarion decides to break into the "girls only" university established by Ida.
Simon Pontin is outstanding as Hilarion, (a touch of the Fonz or John Travolta?).
Excellent characterisations abound - the two kings, Hilarion's friends, Princess Ida, Gama's sons, the Professors and the students.
The comedic dialogue and new lyrics are delivered with verve. A large cast mastered Gillian Parry's choreograph so well in a confined space and the orchestra kept the music light and airy, perfect for this opera.
No moment in this production is wasted; it is pure entertainment.
Set the video for tennis! On until 28th June.
