STRIKER Marian Pahars is on the mend - and relishing the chance of Saints playing in the UEFA Cup.
The Latvian, pictured above, missed virtually all of last season with a series of injuries, the most serious being an injured ankle which has already required three operations.
But as reported in later editions of yesterday's Daily Echo, Pahars is back jogging and hopeful of being fit enough to take part in the pre-season trip to Scotland next month.
Pahars, whose last appearance for Saints was against Newcastle last November, played Champions League football with Skonto Riga and knows all about the atmosphere of European nights.
He said: "It was very disappointing to miss the FA Cup final - but that's life. We will just have to win the Cup this season to make up for it.
"And at least we are in the UEFA Cup which will be fantastic. It is a big opportunity for everyone at the club.
"I played in Europe every year with Skonto - usually in the UEFA Cup after losing to Inter or Barcelona in the Champions League.
"I played against both of them which was an unbelievable experience, both away and at home.
"Hopefully Southampton will be seeded to start with and I think we have a great chance of doing well. I don't see many stronger teams than us.
"But I can't think too far ahead. First I have to get myself fit.
"There is still a long way to go but it feels better enough to give me cause for optimism."
