Teddy Sheringham's transfer to Portsmouth is not yet cut and dried and his agent has suggested the player will listen to other offers before signing on the dotted line.

The Premiership newcomers yesterday announced the former England striker had agreed terms with them and that they hoped to conclude the seal when the 37-year-old - released from Tottenham at the end of last season - later in the week when he returned from holiday.

However, Sheringham's representative Barry Nevill said: "Teddy has agreed terms with Portsmouth but it is not a case of him flying back from holiday to sign for them later this week.

"There are still offers on the table from other clubs and Teddy will look at those first."

Sheringham joined Spurs for a second time in 2001 after a four-year spell at Manchester United, during which time he won the Champions League.

He has won 51 England caps, the last of which was a substitute appearance in the World Cup quarter-final defeat by Brazil in Japan last summer.

Pompey have already signed former Liverpool midfielder Patrik Berger and defender Dejan Stefanovic from Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem.

Boss Harry Redknapp is also looking to recruit Croatian defender Boris Zivkovic for the club's first top flight campaign since 1988.

A Pompey spokesman said: "We hope to have an agreement with Teddy in place soon - but can't do anything further until he returns from his holiday."

Glenn Hoddle may be the bookies' favourite to be the first Premiership manager to lose his job next season, but his former team-mate Garry Brooke believes the ex-Saints boss should be given more time.

"Glenn is embarking on only his third full season in charge and needs more time because it was always going to be a big rebuilding job - Glenn always said he had a five-year plan.

"You are only as good as the players you work with and Glenn hasn't had a great deal of money to play with. He bought well when he first took charge but the squad needs freshening up and that takes finance."
