BATHED in summer sunshine and set in the backdrop of an historic castle the Portchester Gala could not help but draw record crowds.

The annual event again proved popular with locals after it was resurrected several years ago due to popular demand.

As the floats processed through the streets residents lined the pavements and decked out their homes in bunting and balloons to add to the carnival atmosphere.

Seven-year-old Stephen Faulkner, who was on the 2nd Portchester Scout group float, said: "We decided to use the theme of King Alfred and the knights of the round table. I really enjoyed being on the float, it was a lot of fun."

An array of fancy dressed volunteers threw confetti and sweets into the crowds as they made their way to the historic Portchester castle for an afternoon of traditional entertainments, side shows and competitions.

Organiser Brian Robinson said: "We had about 15 floats this year along with the marching bands. The gala is always a great occasion and really brings the community of Portchester together.

"What makes it nice is that the money we raise goes to charities that are local to Portchester so it is the local community who really benefit."

Once inside the walls of the castle crowds were treated to a host of entertainment including dog displays, line dancing and marching bands dressed as Batman.

Dad-of-two Neil Marshall, 35, who had brought his family to the gala said the event was the highlight of the year.

"It is probably the biggest social event for Portchester, and the community really supports it well. The kids love it and there is plenty to do, the added bonus is the weather."
