Inside the huge and historic Schneider aircraft hangar on Calshot Spit, a mesmerised audience was captivated by an unusual and dramatic theatrical dance show.
Motionhouse are five young dancers of extraordinarily adventurous athleticism. Performing on, above, around and through a silver steel gantry set, they produce an hour-long non-stop dynamic display of physical precision.
The atmospheric musical score - ranging from throbbing instrumentals to Frank Sinatra's jazzy What Now My Love - supports creative theatrical dance which moves from gentle classicism to powerful sensuality, the hanging harness moments particularly challenging and engrossing.
The narrative theme - loosely based on the power of words - would perhaps benefit from an explanatory voice-over, and costume changes would add visual variety, but nevertheless Motionhouse's vibrant Volatile - currently touring the UK - is worth catching. It doesn't have the passion, variety and joie de vivre of the Riverdance productions, but it's interesting.
