EMERGENCY food parcels and clothing are to be given out to people in need by a new organisation based in Winchester city centre.
The Basics Bank is forecast to be up and running by next January and organisers are now looking for volunteers to lend a hand.
Opportunities will be available to donate and sort the provisions and to welcome clients with a cup of tea or coffee when they come to use the service.
A site within City Church in Jewry Street has been identified as the probable home of the project and the Rev Peter Davey is helping get the Basics Bank started.
Individuals and families in need of emergency help will be given a voucher by a number of agencies including health visitors, Social Services, the probation service, the City Council and churches.
The client will then be able to exchange their voucher at the Basics Bank for the clothes they need and collect a food parcel if that is also required.
The Winchester Basics Bank is being modelled on a similar project in Southampton that has run successfully for a number of years.
