THE atmosphere of an isolated country branch line during 1940s wartime Britain is being re-created over the weekend in a new event at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway.
Frontline Branchline will portray life on the home front during the wartime years as Havenstreet Station prepares to play its part in the wartime effort - from 1940s fashions to the work of the Home Guard, plus spivs selling nylons on the cheap, ration book catering and the music of the era.
Event organiser Steve Castle said: "The event will portray the Island in 1941 when the UK was at its most isolated and there will be a number of special attractions, including displays of wartime military and civilian vehicles, a military and railway memorabilia exhibition, a Jitterbug dancing show and our wartime fashions quiz."
Throughout the weekend a regular service of steam trains will reflect the flavour of the times. Other events or re-enactments include the railway's own Home Guard and Women's Land Army units in attendance, souvenir ID cards for all visitors, an Austin 7 Club rally on Saturday, a vintage and classic car show and display of country crafts on Sunday.
