Derek Kenway scored a personal best 120 at the Rose Bowl yesterday - by working on his selfish streak.

Kenway scored his second century in four one day games as Hampshire beat Zimbabwe by 16 runs at the Rose Bowl.

And he did so by ensuring that he batted for the full 50 overs.

Kenway said: "Although it's a team game you sometimes have to be selfish in one day cricket and I know that if I bat right through in a 50 over game, we have a good chance of winning.

"It's important for one person to bat through. In previous years I would have played a rash shot but now I'm learning to bat for the duration which is good for me and for the team."

Kenway added: "Zimbabwe had a similar attack to most county attacks without Heath Streak, who is obviously a world class bowler.

"It was a slow pitch but a very good one and when you put 260 on the board you should win nine times out of ten."

Kenway's latest hundred was further confirmation that he is back to his best after a poor 2002 and an indifferent start to the current season.

"The last month has gone really well. It was frustrating for me when things didn't go as well as I would have liked but that made me push harder," added the 24 year-old who readjusted well to 50 overs cricket after playing in Hampshire's three Twenty20 Cup games.

"The Twenty20 is still trial and error but after playing those games this match was like a day in the field in the championship and my body is feeling it!

"In the Twenty20 James Hamblin and I just had to get us off to a good start but it was just nice to be able to play myself in today.

"You've got to play shots and look for more boundaries in the Twenty20 games, it's totally different, you can't afford to get stuck in two minds."
