A FOOTBALL tournament organised in memory of a John Hanson schoolboy who died after falling off his bike has raised more than £2,300 for the paediatric intensive care unit at Southampton General Hospital.

The Troy Parker Charity Shield Tournament was held in honour of the 12-year-old, who died eight days after he bumped his head in the accident at the Greenwich Way junction last year. He was not wearing a helmet.

Troy was a keen sportsman and the event was organised by his family and his last football team, The Test Valley Lions.

It is hoped the weekend, which raised a total of £2,367, will now become an annual event.

Alongside the football, the police ran a successful cycle awareness campaign to show visitors the importance of cycle safety.

Every child that took part in the tournament received a certificate containing Troy's photo as a reminder of the weekend.

Trophies were also presented to the winners and runners-up in each age group.

Troy's mother Carlie Annetts said: "All in all it was a good weekend. The weather was generally kind and the kids had a great time.

"We do intend to make it an annual event and the signs are certainly good so far.

"I'd like to thank all the companies that sent us raffle prizes or helped out in any way and the Test Valley Lions for making it possible. Also to our family and friends for helping and the Andover community as a whole for turning up and supporting us."

Carlie's family have paid tribute to her efforts in organising the weekend, which took place just weeks after the first anniversary of her son's death.

She has also been instrumental in launching a 'wear your helmet' campaign and has become an advocate of cycle safety. Her husband Darren said: "The whole family are so proud of her and all her efforts."
