Eddi Reader, Theatre Royal, Winchester
EDDI READER has a distinctive and powerfully delicate voice, simultaneously jazzy, bluesy, folky, country, but always crystal clear.
Backed by four excellent musicians, her material ranges from sentimental Robert Burns' poetry to the catchy number one hit It's Got To Be Perfect.
With some interesting between-numbers patter, she charmingly entertained an "Aren't you posh!" Winchester audience in the "It's like a chocolate-box!" Theatre Royal with the thoughtful and bittersweet songs Kiteflyer's Hill, Hummingbird, Wings on my Heels, Bell, Book and Candle, and her homage to Scotland, Wild Mountainside.
The unusual support act was the humorous singer-guitarist Nick Harper, whose varied material ranges from a beautiful, gentle song about his daughter to an explosive version of Presley's Guitar Man. Great entertainment.
