LIGHT winds and warm temperatures may have provided almost ideal conditions for time trailists last weekend - but course records stayed intact, though several 'lesser lights' did update their own personal best times.
Aran Stanton (VC St Raphael Waite Contracts) retained top spot in the CTT South League with a near 30mph performance of 20min 4sec to win the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 10 near Andover, reversing the result of the Bognor Regis CC 10 when clubmate Steve Walking beat him into second place two days earlier.
That race was moved at short notice because of major road works at Tangmere, near Chichester, to a single-carriage way course at nearby Halnaker, and the next open race, on June 26, will be similarly affected.
Only competitors to beat Stanton's time on the Andover course were Clarence Wheelers couple Ray Hughes and Ian Neville, whose time of 19-31 brought them victory in the tandem race. Runners-up Ralph Dadswell (Antelope RS Holdings RT) and Dave Johnson (High Wycombe CC) did well to beat Jubilee Wheelers pair Steve Brown and Paul Foxwell but failed to set a new national record for a tandem trike by finishing 21 seconds outside the present figures of 19.50.
One record which did fall - twice in five minutes - was Hantspol CC's 25-mile event record at Petersfield, but there was disappointment for the organisers when race favourite Michael Hutchinson (Team MDT Giant) phoned with his apologies shortly after winning the third round of the Rudy Project series of time trials in Kent on the previous afternoon.
"I'm sure he would have broken the course record (52-42) on a morning like this," observed a race official at the awards ceremony afterwards, but neither Walking nor Dave Dent (SP Systems Wightlink RT) were complaining.
Walking, last year's winner in 55-58, was over two minutes faster this time - but he had no time to celebrate setting a new race record when his Isle of Wight rival crossed the finishing line three seconds faster to win in 53-47. These two have been close rivals for several seasons, but this was the first time in two years Dent has finished faster.
