Tim Stevens obliterated his own class record in his superb 1.8 Lotus Exige to take what must now be an unassailable lead in the Gates of Brockenhurst Gurston Down Hillclimb Championship.

The man from Wimborne wasn't the only local hero in a red-hot weekend meeting.

Rod Thorne from Dorchester roared his fearsome 5.0-litre Westfield to a pair of class win trophies to maintain third place in the series.

Making up for a string of difficult recent events, Gurston's principal sponsor Jonathan Gates from Lymington won his class on both days in his 2.0-litre Westfield, and capped it off with the class winners run off' on Saturday.

Best Time of the Day on Saturday went to the hard charging Ian Chard from New Milton who hurled his 1.6 litre Firehawk single seater up the hill in just 29.48sec.

And Chard clocked Sunday's BTD as well, although Stockbridge's Nik Gregory put in a slick 29.32sec second climb in his 4.0 Pilbeam to ease in front of the Firehawk pilot.

Gregory's performance keeps him top of the Gurston Down/BARC (SW) Top 10 Challenge series, four points clear of Pitt.

Other top local performances came from 1.3-litre Mini pilot Steve Harris from Cranborne who topped the up to 1400cc modified production saloon class on both days by just hundredths of a second.

Paul Webster from Fareham wrapped up the 2-litre sports libre class in his 2.0 Pulsar on both days too, dipping into the 31-second bracket again on Saturday.

Salisbury's Chris Cannell had a great weekend in his fast-developing twin engined 2.6-litre Force SR8 sports libre car, winning his class on both days.
