SOUTHAMPTON Running Club secured the men's team silver medals at the D-Day 10k Road Race at Portsmouth's Mountbatten Centre.

Mike Twomey led the way in fifth place, clocking 32 minutes and 24 seconds, and Steve Axon - tackling his third race in five days - was 15th in 34.40.

John James was next home in 24th in 35.53 and those three were backed up by Mike Smith, first vet-55 in 39.29, Peter Staunton (41.03) and Sophie Boot (51.47).

Meanwhile, the SRC Ultra Distance squad returned to Dartmoor to defend their 2002 title over 36 miles of undulating Devon countryside.

Unfortunately the heat and terrain got the better of two team members, who dropped out at around the 26-mile mark, leaving Paul Carter as their lone finisher in fourth, clocking four hours, 11 minutes and 29 seconds.

This Sunday all county eyes will be focussed on the final round of the Hampshire Road Race League, which is incorporated into the Brading 10k on the Isle of Wight.
