CROWDS of more than 12,000 basked in the sunshine at the weekend's Isle of Wight Music Festival near Newport - and already thoughts are turning to next year's event.

Police, who praised the behaviour of festival goers, said that by yesterday afternoon there had been just two arrests - one for a drug offence, the other for theft from the event campsite.

"To have just two arrests out of 12,500 festival goers is just fantastic. The atmosphere was very good," a police spokesman said.

On-site ambulance crews said about 100 people had been treated but no injuries had been serious.

Organiser John Giddings said he was delighted at the event and was already talking to bands and new sponsors for next year's festival.

"I would certainly like to come back next year and am working to get some serious sponsorship on board. There have been some possible sponsors here this weekend and they also like what they see."

Saturday's showstoppers were headliners Paul Weller and Starsailor with Iggy Pop and The Thrills also proving crowd favourites. Sunday's line-up included Bryan Adams, Counting Crows and Hell is for Heroes. Also on the line up over the weekend were local bands The Nautical Theme and Jimmy's Big Fish.
