WEYBROOK Park assistant professional Andrew Cloke and amateur Darren Ellis are in the final of Europe's biggest pro-am, the Lombard Trophy.

An all-expenses-paid trip to Portugal and San Lorenzo, one of the continent's finest courses, is their reward for victory in the second recent Southern regional final held at Camberley Heath.

The duo carded a superb 12-under-par 60 to win by three shots.

And for 21-year-old Cloke, who turned professional two years ago, it could open the door to his dreams of a career on the European Tour.

He said: "It's fantastic to make the finals out on the Algarve, but now I want the £7,500 first prize to fund me at the European Tour Qualifying School later this year.

"That's my dream, to play on the big tour. Now I might just have a chance."

Heading into the closing holes after two eagles on the back nine put them into the lead, Ellis, a 13 handicapper, notched up a birdie with a stroke at the 17th.

Then Cloke holed a snaking four-footer above the last hole to make sure of victory and a place in the 16 team grand final on September 5-9.

Ellis, who works at AWE in radiological protection, said: "I've never played in anything as big as this before. Towards the end, I was completely wasted."

Meanwhile, Basingstoke Golf Club's pairing of Gue Shoesmith and David Brown finished third in the first regional final at Camberley Heath.

The duo ended up shooting a 10-under-par 62, missing out by a stroke. There was a strong local interest in the final.

Sandford Springs' Gary Edmunds and Gerry Pinfold, a five handicapper, shot a six-under-par 66.

Dummer's Andrew Fannon and John Finnan, a 19 handicapper, shot a two-under-par 70.

Both Alastair Briggs and Damien Reid (19), of Test Valley, and Steve Ward and Alan Bulpitt (12), shot one-over-par rounds of 73.
