A TEENAGER who was brutally assaulted in an attack continues to fight for his life in hospital.
The 17-year-old was rushed to Southampton General Hospital's intensive care ward after receiving life-threatening head injuries outside West End youth club.
His parents yesterday continued to keep a bedside vigil while they wait for their son to regain consciousness.
Another 17-year-old youth will appear at Southampton Youth Court on Wednesday in relation to the incident.
Acting Det Insp Phil Jones confirmed yesterday that an arrest had been made, leading to a charge of grievous bodily harm.
The incident, which happened at about 7.45pm on Wednesday, has sent shock waves through the West End community.
Dog walkers and villagers were asked to keep away from the playing field next to the youth club as scenesof-crime officers scoured the area for clues.
Acting Det Insp Jones said: "There was an altercation between the two youths resulting in the injured party sustaining this serious head injury.
No weapons are believed to have been used.
"A 17-year-old male youth was charged under section 18 with grievous bodily harm with intent and granted conditional bail until his court appearance next Wednesday.
"Our inquiry team is still continuing with interviewing witnesses, which will continue through the weekend and next week.
"But we understand, as best we are going to understand, what has actually happened."
