Gordon Strachan's summer search for a new striker could see him look to France and a move for Tony Vairelles.
The experienced 30-year-old hitman is out of contract with French champions Lyon and is unlikely to be retained, making him a free transfer.
Saints are known to have considered a move for Vairelles in the past.
But now he is available for nothing there is a chance they may re-ignite their interest.
No offer has been made to Vairelles as Strachan continues to think over his plans, which could include the signing of a foreign striker on loan for the 2003/04 season.
Vairelles has played all his career in France, starting off at Nancy before switching to Lens, then Lyon where he has had loan spells at Bordeaux, Bastia and finally Lens at the end of last season.
The striker is known for his aerial presence and fierce shot and has played in the Champions League.
He has also won eight caps for his country, scoring once.
Meanwhile, tabloid speculation today again linked Newcastle with a summer bid for Saints defender Wayne Bridge - a possible swoop mentioned in the Daily Echo over a fortnight ago.
Saints were also linked with veteran Manchester City striker Shaun Goater, with Leicester and Wolves are rumoured to be keen on the 33-year-old.
