Victory for Great Scott II, Reckless Rat, Santana 2, Glass Onion and Zoum!

The sixth race of the Royal Southampton Yacht Club's Twilight series was held on June 5 and saw a south-westerly breeze touching eight knots. The Race Management Team set a two-lap race off Netley.

Class 1 Club handicap saw Gordon Appleby's Lightwave 48 Scarlet Oyster take line honours. Victory on corrected time was a tie between Eurof Phillips' Adams 10 Great Scott and John Danby's X-332 Reckless Rat with Mike X-332 XParrott in third place.

Class 2 Club handicap saw William Perrin's Capo 30 Santana 2 first to finish and first on corrected time by 41 seconds from Steve Sault's Sigma33 Hooligan with in third place Tiger Feet, the Hunter 707 of John Cooper and Ian Townend.

Ian Barry's Evolution 22 Glass Onion took line honours in Class 3 and also won on corrected time. Philip Williams's Sonata Sequoia was second and Martin Atchley's Empathy took third.

In the Multihull Class, David McLeman's Dragonfly 920 Zoum! was first to finish and won on corrected time from Ben Goodland's Strider 24 Tigger, with George Burn's Farrier F27 Smokey Bear third.

The eagerly awaited decision on funding from Sport England towards the £6.4m development project for the Weymouth and Portland sailing Academy has been deferred again until early July, but the academy remains confidently optimistic that the go-ahead will finally be confirmed.

A funding contribution of £3m towards the sailing academy development, at Osprey Quay on Portland, is under review by Sport England as part of its re-assessment of funding for 250 community capital and revenue projects, due to falling income from the National Lottery.

The Sport England Council met earlier this week, but advised that it needs further time to complete its comprehensive review and does not intend to announce the results until after its next council meeting on July 7.

In stark contrast to the double-handed Tour de Bretagne race around the rugged Atlantic coastline, the first solo regatta of the 2003 Figaro circuit starts this weekend from Marseille in the heat and fickle, but sometimes violent, winds of the Mediterranean.

Thirty-three entries, including sole UK skipper Sam Davies on SKANDIA, are entered for La Generali Mediterranee.

Rumour has it that an Inter-Pub Challenge is to take place next spring with the proceeds going towards the John Merricks Sailing Trust.

The Robind Hood, Durley, King & Queen, Hamble and Pier View in Cowes are said to be among the participants.
