ANDOVER could get its own cinema in the next five or six years - if the finances and location can be agreed.
Questionnaires sent out to members of the public have shown an increasing demand and overwhelming support for the facility and Test Valley Borough Council is also keen to see a cinema return to the town.
At the moment, people have to travel to Basingstoke or Salisbury to see a film after the Savoy cinema closed in 2001.
But the borough's cultural development officer Charles Savage says a cinema is what people want and it's a view backed by the councillors.
He said: "Everyone here has great enthusiasm for it and it's the top of the public's ideas for this town.
"Although there is nothing actually down on paper yet, the councillors have agreed that this step is a good idea."
The two main issues faced by the council are the costs and where the cinema will be sited.
Mr Savage said: "To build a four or five screen cinema would cost around £5 to £6 million and the council would have to raise that money.
"The other problem is the location. It will not be built in the same place as the old one as the nightclubs that are there are thinking of refurbishing their clubs."
