OAKRIDGE West ended their first season in the Basingstoke and District Saturday League with a piece of silverware in the trophy cabinet after winning the Peter Raynbird Cup.

Oakridge were born out of last season's Hampshire division two side Hadleigh, who were forced out of the higher league due to the rising cost of running a team at that level.

The team changed their name and moved grounds from Preston Candover to Taveners Close in Oakridge.

Jon Nichols remained as manager and his son Ben finished the club's leading goal scorer. Their first campaign in the Basingstoke League premier division saw them finish eighth, separated by goal difference from Basingstoke Labour Club.

In the Peter Raynbird Cup final in April, they won 2-1 after extra time against AFC Aldermaston, a side who finished two places above them in the league.

In a goal-less first half, Oakridge's Duane Crome shot just wide and Fred Slynn had a shot saved.

After the break, Crome headed just wide from a Stacey Clay corner before AFC Aldermaston took the lead.

However, Oakridge hit back when Ben Nichols equalised with a direct free-kick from 40 yards out after 79 minutes.

The same striker almost scored again six minutes later but his shot was deflected wide and it was left to Clay to score the winner in the second period of extra time to prevent a penalty shoot-out.
