IT WAS the tragedy that touched a community.
Schoolboy Tom Rigden went home on February 14 without a care in the world as he looked forward to celebrating his eighth birthday with friends the next day.
But the youngster collapsed after suffering a sudden blood clot on the brain and died the next day in Southampton General Hospital.
Family and friends were devastated by the loss of the boy described by head teacher of Stoke Park Junior School Andy Heyes as a "very caring, supporting and quiet little boy".
In honour of his attitude to others, young members of the school council decided to build a "friendship bench" in his name.
The school approached Bishopstoke Parish Council who agreed to meet half the cost with a £500 donation.
Now, whenever children feel lonely or unhappy, they can look for friendly support from children like Tom by sitting on the bench.
Mr Heyes said: "Tom was one of those kids who put everybody ahead of himself. He was loved to bits. The bench will be a key feature of school life for years to come and a wonderful way to remember him."
The huge turnout at the young Saints fan's funeral was a perfect testament to his popularity.
Between three and four hundred mourners attended the service at Southampton Crematorium, Mr Heyes said.
