BASINGSTOKE'S newest supermarket opens its doors today - and it has received a ringing endorsement from the town's mayor.

First citizen Cllr Gerry Traynor was among the dignitaries, councillors and business leaders who were treated to a sneak preview of the Asda store in Brighton Way, Brighton Hill, on Friday.

Cllr Traynor said: "I welcome this store. It has been a long time coming, and the people of Brighton Hill welcome it too.

"I am delighted Asda is getting involved in the community. I wish them a long career in Basingstoke."

The £25million store has created 450 jobs. It covers 50,000sqft and boasts a deli, bakery, fish counter and rotisserie, as well as the company's own Chinese food and curry range, jewellery, and the George fashion range.

The store's opening hours are Monday to Saturday from 8am to 10pm, and 11am to 5pm on a Sunday.

Basingstoke is Asda's 260th store.

General store manager Steve Kelly said: "We've been overwhelmed with the friendly reception we've received from the local community and we can't wait to begin trading.

"Everyone's worked really hard to get the store ready.

"We hope customers will be impressed when they see the wide range of products we've got to offer, plus our great customer service."
