IT'S something Lynda Wanbon looks forward to every fortnight.

The 83-year-old widow likes nothing better than meeting up with her friends at the Stubbington Lunch Club.

Like many of the 18 men and women who get together at Crofton Community Centre every second Monday, she lives alone.

For some it is the only opportunity they have for a chance to socialise over a hot meal, coffee and biscuits.

If it weren't for the dedicated army of volunteers who come to collect Lynda and cook the meals at the club she would be forced to stay at home.

"I can't get on the bus anymore and go out when I want. Everyone here is marvellous," she said.

Just four months ago the long-running club faced closure due to a lack of volunteers.

However, thanks to an appeal in the Daily Echo for more helpers to come forward the threat has been lifted after a new leader and cook stepped in to help.

For Lynda this means she can still enjoy her meals chatting to friend Catherine Livermore, aged 81.

"It's a very friendly place and we are all very happy that people have come to help keep it going," said Lynda, a former hairdresser.

Edwin Ingleton of Club Hampshire, which took over the 39 luncheon clubs from the Red Cross last year, said: "We really appreciate the efforts of the Daily Echo.

"It made a big difference.

"If we don't have a steady flow of help it makes the running of the club much more difficult.

"We are very grateful to all the past volunteers, existing ones and new club leader Finbar O'Connor."

After our appeal the club also attracted three new members.

Mr O'Connor, a househusband said: "I wanted to help because you are helping other people to have a better standard of life, even if it's only for a day.

"I get an awful lot out of it. The members have got a lot of stories to tell."
