WORKERS flocked to the grounds of Winchester Cathedral yesterday to make the most of the glorious sunshine and soak up some rays.
Everyone seemed to have the same idea as hoards of hungry people congregated for an al fresco lunch on the grass.
Temperatures reached highs of 24C/75F in the city on one of the hottest days of the year so far.
Winchester was warmer than a number of European cities, putting places such as Ankara (21C/70F) and Istanbul (23C/73F) into the shade. The sunshine was a relief to the many pasty-faced people who had feared summer would never arrive after a mostly miserable May.
A Met Office spokesman confirmed the warm temperatures look set to last at least until the weekend.
But there is a possibility thunderstorms and showers could be triggered throughout the UK on Saturday and Sunday.
