HAMPSHIRE finished third in the women's section of the CAU Inter-Counties Track & Field Championships in Bedford.
There were three individual winners for the county - Lucy Vaughan (ex-Aldershot) in the 800m, Katy Watts (Basingstoke) in the javelin and Kelly Sotherton, right, in the long jump.
Women's team boss Sheena Fitzmaurice declared herself delighted with her team's performance. "We didn't have a full team so to finish third was excellent," she explained.
"Last year we finished fifth with 31 points. This year we were third with 51.5. You can see the difference having a few winners makes.
"You get ten points for each win, compared to the ones and twos we were getting last year."
Sotherton, who was raised on the Isle of Wight but who now lives and works in Birmingham, finished eighth in the pentathlon at last year's Commonwealth Games.
She won her event as the only girl to jump over six metres.
l ISLE of Wight twins Bryony and Kathryn Frost were in the medals in the under-20 South of England Championships at Watford.
Competing in the under-20 women's 1,500 final, Bryony was second in 4.39.77 and Kathryn third in 4.33.91. The winner was Katrina Wootton of Bedford in 4.31.15.
