THIS was the scene in Winchester yesterday as members of Hampshire police's armed response unit stood guard with machine guns outside one of the top crown courts in the country.

The unusual sight that greeted visitors and residents to Winchester alike was made all the more intriguing by the silence surrounding their presence.

The two officers, both carrying Heckler and Koch machine guns and side arms, were stationed outside the courts at the top end of the High Street by the Westgate for most of the day.

However, the police declined to explain why there was a need for the extra security.

A force spokesman said: "We're not in a position to say exactly why the officers are there.

"All we will say is that it is part of a pre-planned operation and no further details are being given out for fear of jeopardising the operation."

It is a rare sight to see armed police officers on Winchester's streets, though they have been deployed before, particular during trials where trouble is suspected.

Adrian Jones, 48, a shop manager from Kings Worthy who passed-by the officers, said: "Well, it's definitely not something you see every day is it?

"I'd like to know what they're up to, but at least it makes you feel a bit more safe whatever they're up to."

Although another passer-by, Sarah Jackson, 23, a student from Stanmore Lane, didn't feel quite as secure.

She said: "It's a bit worrying really. If they weren't needed they wouldn't be there, so what are they there for?"

The armed patrols had resumed their mystery duties earlier today.
