PAUL JONES could leave Saints this summer - after admitting he needs first-team football to remain Welsh number one.
The 36-year-old spoke for the first-time of his FA Cup final heartache ahead of Wales' friendly against the United States at San Jose in the early hours of Tuesday morning, admitting he wants answers about his future at St Mary's.
Jones, pictured, has been at Saints for six years but is now convinced he has lost his number one status after being left out of the Millennium Stadium clash against Arsenal last week.
He was dropped from the starting line-up in favour of Antti Niemi, although he did get onto the pitch in the second half when the Finnish international collapsed with a torn calf muscle.
Jones said: "I will sit down with Gordon Strachan over the summer to determine whether I have a future at the club.
"I'm as determined as I've always been to continue as Wales' first-choice goalkeeper, so it is vital that I'm playing first team football for my club - if not for Southampton, then elsewhere."
The Welshman lost his place to the outstanding Niemi midway through the season, but played six of the seven games proceeding the final after his rival for the goalkeeper's position suffered a knee injury.
Jones said: "At least I can say I played a part in an FA Cup final and picked up a runners-up medal. But it was a massive disappointment not playing in the final.
"Antti had been struggling with an injury and, in his absence, I had played the last few league games.
"So it was obviously a choker for me that he went straight back in for the Cup final - especially after I had played in the semi-final.
"And, of course, I was particularly keen to start the game on home turf and in a stadium I am very familiar with.
"After Gordon Strachan had read out the team, I felt pretty low for the rest of the day, though it was important I didn't show that in front of the players.
"It would have been unfair for me to mope around and make them miserable."
Jones now hopes to put all that behind him and enjoy Wales' trip to the West Coast.
He added: "This game with Wales will pep me up a bit.
"It's always refreshing to link up with the Wales team. Everything is so professional and it's always so enjoyable."
