TIME trialists have the opportunity of racing twice this afternoon in 10-mile events taking place within 15 miles of each other, at Bentley and Greatham in the north-east corner of the country.
The first, on the A31 between Alton and Farnham, starts at 2 pm and takes place on the same road which has been chosen for the British 25-mile championships on June 8.
The second gets underway four hours later and includes a special prize for entrants employed in any one of the country's emergency services. This Hantspol CC
promotion has attracted 68 competitors from as far away as Jersey and the Lake District.
In the absence of last year's record breaking winner, Michael Hutchinson (Team MDT Giant) who lost his national 10-mile title to 2001 champion Stuart Dangerfield (Camel Valley C & TC) last Sunday, tomorrow's event looks tailor made for Steve Walkling (VC St Raphael).
Eleventh in last Sunday's championship and currently holding second spot behind clubmate Aran Stanton, who also rides, Walkling is enjoying his most successful season to date.
He is due on the start line for the Rother Valley CC 25 a few miles away near Petersfield little more than 12 hours later.
He and some of his clubmates will be up bright and early again on Monday for Poole Wheelers' Bank Holiday 10 in Dorset.
The shorter distance of this race has attracted just over 100 entrants - twice the number of Sunday's 25 - and his rivals in this event include veterans Ray Hughes (Clarence Wheelers) and Glenn Longland (Antelope RS Holdings RT).
Tomorrow will see them and 33 others compete in the first of this year's 30-mile events on South District roads which Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers promote west of Poole.
