SHE couldn't go to the awards ceremony, so the awards ceremony went to her. In hospital recovering from a stroke, Muriel Alford was unable to pick up her Citizen of the Year award in person when the ceremony was held last week.
Newly-elected Fareham mayor Marian Ellerton agreed to carry out a special presentation at the Gosport War Memorial hospital instead.
Mrs Alford's two daughters picked up the citizen of honour award on their mother's behalf at the town's mayor making ceremony where tribute was paid to her efforts in the community.
Mrs Alford, 82, receives the award after years of service to elderly townsfolk, establishing a community group and fitness club and also devoting her time to the Women's Royal Voluntary Service.
