NEW plans have been submitted to enhance Andover's Union Street shopping arcade.
The proposal is to replace the existing flat roofed canopy, which officers say has a 'weathered appearance'.
Members of Test Valley Borough Council's northern area planning committee will hear next week that the canopy detracts from the character of the pedestrian arcade and has no positive contribution to the shopping experience.
A report says: "The proposed replacement would use a modern design, appropriate to the function of a modern shopping arcade."
The materials of toughened glass and painted steel with a pitched roof will be hard wearing and resistant.
"The replacement canopy would enhance the appearance while maintaining the character of Union Street and the wider conservation area," say officers.
A previous application by Test Valley Borough Council was deferred in order to negotiate an amended design for the proposed front entrance canopy onto the High Street.
The canopy has been removed from this application to ensure there is no delay in starting the redevelopment work.
Planning officers are recommending approval of the application by Test Valley Borough Council and members are due to discuss the plan on Thursday.
