Evelyn Glennie, Turner Sims Concert Hall, Southampton
MUSIC lovers are fortunate to have the splendid Turner Sims concert hall in which to enjoy world-class musicians.
Evelyn Glennie is a phenomenal percussionist, displaying a staggering technique on a wide range of instruments, from drums, cymbals, vibraphone, marimba and glockenspiel to a collection of quirky children's toys.
Supported and complemented by accomplished pianist Philip Smith, Glennie enthralled a sold-out audience for more than two hours.
Her eloquent and charismatic introductions are informative and interesting.
Her percussion skills, sometimes using three sticks in each hand simultaneously, are awesome.
The great Buddy Rich was a better drummer and the creative Gary Burton a more melodic vibraphonist, but Glennie explores a huge variety of unusual instruments.
Darkness to Light featured dramatic and atmospheric sound tones. Solo Snare Drum displayed Glennie's mesmeric control, from tantalising pianissimo to blazing fortissimo. An excellent concert.
