On their first appearance in the national finals of a public speaking competition, Winchester's Peter Symonds' College team came third.
The event, organised by the Rotary Club of Great Britain and Ireland, was held in Warwick.
Chairman, Charlotte Blythe, and speaker, Jonny Scott, have taken part in the competition several times, first for The Westgate School and for the last two years as representatives of the college.
Sophie Ibbotson, formerly of South Wilts Grammar School gave the vote of thanks.
Jonny spoke about the laws on drugs, a topic which has earned them first place in the many qualifying rounds.
Seven teams competed for the trophy, which won by Hornsea School, East Riding of Yorkshire. Warwick School came second. All the teams were awarded certificates and books and the first three also had individual trophies.
"It was a splendid day," said teacher and coach, Sandra Showell.
"It's the first time we've won through to the national final and we were thrilled to come in the top three. At that stage, the standards are so high and the voting so close, it can go either way. Jonny, Charlotte and Sophie will all go far."
