Jean Hammerton, Independent city councillor for Bishop's Waltham, was elected Winchester's 804th mayor at the Guildhall on Wednesday. Outgoing mayor,
John Steel, handed her the keys to the city and the mayoral residence, Abbey House. The new deputy mayor is Cecily Sutton, Lib-Dem member for Colden Common and Twyford.
Mrs Hammerton, whose husband, Donald, will be her escort, is a non-executive director of the Mid Hants Primary Care Trust, a member of the Hampshire Wildlife Trust and a trustee of the St John's Winchester Charity.
She chairs Bishop's Waltham CAB and Meon Valley Heartstart. Her chosen charities are the Cancer Support Unit at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital; Snaps-Special Needs and Activities Play Schemes; the CAB and Heartstart
