THE first sod of turf has been ceremoniously turned at the site of a new Army housing development in Middle Wallop.
The building of the 82 bedspace project is one of around 100 being undertaken across the country over the next five years as part of the Defence Estate's Project SLAM - Single Living Accommodation Modernisation.
Brigadier Richard Folkes OBE ADC, the director of aviation, operated the controls of a digger to make the first cut of the project.
Middle Wallop is also the first of the Army's sites where work has begun.
SLAM aims to deliver some 16,000 predominantly single en-suite bedrooms over the next five years.
The Middle Wallop scheme incorporates flatlets of six or eight individual rooms, each flatlet having its own kitchen and use of a common room.
The theme of the design is to create a modern campus type of environment.
It's hoped work will be finished by March 2004.
