A FIRE ripped through a Bishopstoke couple's open-plan dream home last night after they forgot about a chip pan.
Anne Garrard and her partner, both in their 30s, were lucky to escape the inferno in Fair Oak Road, said a fire spokesman.
It started in the kitchen at 7pm and quickly swept through the downstairs floor before engulfing the whole house.
The couple had moved all of the interior doors for an open-plan effect - but this allowed the fire to take hold quickly.
A fire brigade spokesman said: "They were lucky to get out because the house had no fire stops. They did not have long to escape because there were no interior doors and it turned into a chimney. The house was totally destroyed."
A neighbour, who did not wished to be named, said: "It was very dramatic.
"There were flames pouring out like something you see on TV.
"I ran into the adjoining semi-detached house to save some of their possessions but the smoke was just too thick and I had to get out."
The couple keep up to four rescued dogs which neighbours believe also escaped.
The fire spokesman issued a warning to close doors to prevent such fires spreading quickly.
He said: "Before you go to bed make sure all interior doors are shut, check plugs and make sure cookers are not on. It is routine that could save your life."
