MORE than 20 teams from firms and organisations in the Basingstoke area yesterday took part in a special five-a-side competition.
The inaugural Urbis Lighting/Basingstoke Gazette Challenge Cup competition is delivering a cash boost of several thousand pounds to the specialist schools initiative in the Basingstoke borough.
The competition - which has been organised by representatives from the borough council, Brighton Hill Community College, Urbis Lighting, and The Gazette - has raised funds, largely through the competition's entry fees, to help local schools bid for specialist status.
So far, five borough schools have qualified for this prestigious status, which brings a benefit to the school and also their feeder schools.
Yesterday's tournament took place at Brighton Hill Community College in Basingstoke and included a team of veterans from Southampton FC.
A four-page special on the five-a-side event will be featured in next week's Monday Gazette.
