James Beattie goes into tomorrow's final Premiership match of the season against Manchester City with "one last chance" to win the Golden Boot.

The Saints hitman has led the top flight's scoring charts for much of the season but has recently just fallen behind Manchester United hotshot Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The Dutchman leads the way with 24 with Beattie and Arsenal's Thierry Henry joint second with 23.

All three round off their Premiership campaigns tomorrow with Saints facing Manchester City at Maine Road, United travelling to Everton and Arsenal going to bottom-of-the- table Sunderland.

Beattie said: "This game is one last chance. I could have got a couple on Wednesday night and I'm a little bit disappointed. But such is life.

"There's still a good chance for me to get the Golden Boot - I have got the trophies for being the first player to ten and 20 goals but, without the real one at the end of the season, they are worthless.

"The lads know what position I'm personally in and where the chairman stands with getting results for the placings.

"We want to get as high up the league as we can go and I'll be telling the lads to do it properly.

"But I think being FA Cup finalists and finishing in the top ten - if possible - would be a good season for Southampton.

"Bringing the trophy back to the city would be unbelievable."

But, to win the coveted Golden Boot award Beattie will have to get past goalkeeping legend Peter Schmeichel.

Schmeichel plays his last ever game in the final match at Maine Road before City move grounds in time for next season.

"It's the last game at Maine Road but we're going there to spoil the party and get back on with it," said Beattie.

"It's the last game for Peter Schmeichel as well and he's been a tremendous player.

"He had some great years at Manchester United which everyone recognises but I'd love to slot a couple past him - or three!"

Beattie was amongst the subs for Wednesday night's 6-1 mauling at Arsenal as Gordon Strachan looked to protect his star striker ahead of the FA Cup final.

He came off the bench and missed two good chances but is likely to start tomorrow as he chases what would be his personal crowning glory of a great league season.

"It was a strange game and it was very bad watching it form the bench," said Beattie of Wednesday night's Highbury defeat.

"I said to the gaffer that I wanted to play but he made a decision about leaving me out because of the final but it's hard to watch to watch it from the bench.

"But then to come on and miss two chances like that was even more disappointing."
