Nathan The Wise, Minerva Theatre
ORIGINALLY banned by the Nazis, Lessing's important play exhorting us all to live in peace no matter what our religion is still relevant today.
Set in Jerusalem 1192 during the truce between the Muslim Saladin and the Crusaders, the story revolves around a Jewish merchant Nathan. Respected for his wealth and wisdom, he is summoned by the great Saladin himself to answer the question: 'Which is the true religion?'
In the 18th century this idealogical drama would have been fresh and revolutionary but now it seems overly simplistic and requires your child-like belief in a series of "coincidences" to make it work.
Edward Kemp's version updates the language and introduces some cute comedy into an otherwise simple morality tale.
The entire cast was strong but special mention should be made of Jonathan Cullen's AlHafi and Jeffrey Kissoon's Saladin, who both went beyond the call of duty.
