David Graveney, the chairman of England's selectors, has given Hampshire bowler Chris Tremlett a timely boost.
Tremlett, 21, bowled the last over of the C&G first round match against Sussex, which Hampshire's south coast rivals won by four wickets with three balls to spare at the Rose Bowl on Wednesday.
And Southampton-born Tremlett was also the bowler when Middlesex clinched a National League win off the last ball of the match on Monday.
But Graveney, who was at the Rose Bowl on Wednesday, has not ruled out an England debut for Tremlett at some stage this summer.
Tremlett's Academy mentor Rod Marsh has joined the panel of selectors and Graveney believes that the 6ft 7in bowling prospect just needs to show more consistency.
He said: "We want to see that Chris Tremlett is bowling lots of overs and playing lots of games and being consistent.
"He's never going to be able to bowl express pace but we want to see him fit because with his height he could offer us an extra option.
"He is a bit like Angus Fraser in that respect and there is room in the England side for a bowler like that, someone who can get a bit of extra bounce.
"At the moment Chris doesn't get it right all the time, he sometimes falls away in his action but, when he gets it right, he is superb.
"If he shows he can bowl well consistently, he will be seriously considered - he is certainly a player we're looking closely at."
Graveney was also running the rule over the Sussex trio of Chris Adams, Matthew Prior and James Kirtley.
John Crawley's form is also being closely monitored with the squad for the first Test against Zimbabwe, which starts on May 22, set to be chosen on Thursday.
But there is another Hampshire player who Graveney and the rest of the selectors are considering ahead of the three- match Natwest Challenge against Pakistan in mid-June.
Retirements and injuries to all-rounders Craig White and Paul Collingwood mean there are six vacancies from England's last one day international side, which lost to Australia in the World Cup.
"It's the biggest void I can ever remember," said Graveney, who added: "There is a great incentive for new players to knock on the door. We are beginning with a fresh canvas and that's a very exciting prospect.
"Dimitri Mascarenhas is someone who has been mentioned for a little while.
"He's very capable with bat and ball, a genuine all-rounder and we haven't ruled him out. But, at his pace, he needs to be deadly accurate with the ball."
