ARTHURIAN myth may be big on adventure and heroism, but falls short in the convincing female role models department.
Here to correct that, and put a modern spin on a well-worn literary classic, are Music Theatre Wales and The Royal Opera House, with their co-production of Gwyneth and the Green Knight.
The traditional Arthurian tale with a twist tells the story of a young peasant girl who dreams of becoming a Knight of the Round Table. Disguised as a boy, she leaves home and becomes squire to the newest Knight on the block, Gawain, who rapidly finds himself in a beheading competition with the awesome Green Knight.
Gwyneth's adventures take her through magical kingdoms and dark forests to meetings with ogres, unicorns and eventually back to the wily Green Knight - head intact.
Lynne Plowman and Martin Riley's opera combines adventure, comedy, magic and mystery and is aimed squarely at a family audience. The musical score embraces an array of musical styles, while the costumes are inspired by traditional medieval dress.
May 13, The Anvil, Basingstoke. Performance: 7.45pm. Tickets: £12. Box office: 01256 844244.
