The life of one of the most famous citizens of Winchester's twin-town, Giessen in Germany, will be the subject of a talk next week.
Bob Jones, a former schools inspector, will speak about the life and achievements of Justus von Liebig, a professor in Giessen in the 19th century.
He was one of the founding fathers of organic chemistry, whose work, said Mr Jones, transformed scientific education, medical practice and agriculture.
The talk will discuss von Liebig's scientific achievements and his impact on Germany and Britain. This year is the bicentenary of his birth. The talk will be in the science lecture theatre at Peter Symonds' College, Owens Road, Winchester, on May 8th, at 7.30pm.
It will be open to members of the general public but there will be a collection in aid of the Winchester-Giessen Anglo-German Society, the organisers.
The society is also organising a talk by Dr Edgar Feuchtwanger, a former professor of history at Southampton University, for the same venue on July 3rd. He will discuss Imperial Germany, 1870-1918.
