Swanmore Conservation Group has been granted three Whitbread Action-Earth awards.

The voluntary community group looks after Marsh's Meadows, Green's Wood and the "Drover's Pond" in Broad Lane on behalf of Swanmore Parish Council, who own the land.

The awards are organised by the national charity CSV (Community Service Volunteers) and supported by Whitbread plc and the Community Fund. The scheme involves over 750 voluntary organisations, businesses and community groups UK wide. The awards recognise and provide cash support for projects of immediate and lasting benefit to the environment.

The awards in Swanmore relate to three projects. One is for wildlife encouragement for a scheme which will install two bat boxes and a tawny owl nesting box in Green's Wood.

The second project has been improving access to the pond by laying a red gravel path across the muddy area from Broad Lane.

The third scheme is the installation of a kissing gate at the entrance to Marsh's Meadow in Broad Lane. Monthly work parties on all the initiatives are organised by the conservation group.
