City councillors have approved a report that will look into how heritage services are managed.
The city council currently spends over £1m, which includes grants, on archaeology, museums, the historic resources centre, monuments and the conservation section of development services.
Under the Heritage Best Value Review, officers will look at each section and decide whether the services they provide are economical and necessary.
Sue Nelmes, Lib-Dem member for St Bartholomew ward, said: "I am pleased to see this report because it looks into the best way we can look after our heritage."
The review will not cover natural heritage, which comes under the environment review, or church heritage.
