Testing of bones found on the beach at Warsash - a mile from where Hamble teenager, Daniel Nolan, disappeared on New Year's Day, 2002, has failed to reveal whether they are his.
"Initial tests on the bones found at Warsash, conducted by the Forensic Science Service, have proven inconclusive," said police. "Despite repeated testing, it has not been possible to extract DNA from the bones."
The investigation team is now consulting forensic experts on the possibility of mitochondrial DNA testing - establishing a link only to the mother - being carried out.
